Mobile Advertising: The $20B Opportunity Mirage

We get closer to the heart of the matter when we look at a common thought pattern, an age-old and dangerously misleading algorithm:

The [new thing] is like the [old thing] only [smaller | bigger]

We’ve seen this formula, and its abuse, before. Decades ago, incumbents had to finally admit that minicomputers weren’t simply small mainframes. Manufacturers, vendors, software makers had to adapt to the constraints and benefits of a new, different environment. A semi-generation later, we saw it again: Microcomputers weren’t diminutive minicomputers but truly personal machines that consumers could lift with their arms, minds, and credit cards.

And nothing is more personal than the handset. We might have, in an era when “receive only” was the available option, accepted commercials on transistor radios, but we never did with the Walkman.

There is a continuum from cinema to the handset, along a number of dimensions, that suggests the conclusion of this article is correct.

Dotcom search warrants ruled illegal

Justice Winkelmann ordered that no more items taken in the raids could be removed from New Zealand, and instructed the attorney-general to return clones of the hard drives held by New Zealand police.

She said the search warrants were invalid because they were general warrants which lacked specificity about the offence and the scope of the items to be searched for.

Without a valid warrant, police were trespassing and exceeded what they were lawfully authorised to do.

Justice Winkelmann said no one had addressed whether police conduct also amounted to unreasonable search and seizure, but her preliminary view was that it did.

Hail A Fellow Human, Not A Taxi With ???SideCar??? ??? The New P2P Uber

Punch in your location and destination and soon a civilian SideCar driver agrees to take you. Plus, thanks to background checks and a rating system (which we grill CEO Sunil Paul about in a video interview below), you might be less likely to be murdered than in a traditional cab or meeting anyone on Craigslist. SV Angel, Lerer, Ventures, and Mark Pincus are all investors, because they see how SideCar could rethink transportation, and make it so you never buy another car.

Vortex radio waves could boost wireless capacity ???infinitely???

It is hard to put into words just how significant Thide???s discovery could be. If the vortex preserves other aspects of wireless communications, such as multiplexing, then in the short term we could be looking at a wireless spectrum that can carry 10 or 20 times as much data. In the long term, as our understanding of orbital angular momentum grows, our wireless spectrum could effectively be infinite. To be honest, this is such a huge twist for wireless communications that the full repercussions are not yet known.

Does life flow towards flow?

His work suggests that humans are most productive, and also most satisfied, when they are totally absorbed in a clear but challenging task which they are capable of completing. The suggested conditions necessary to achieve the flow state are

  1. ???One must be involved in an activity with a clear set of goals. This adds direction and structure to the task.
  2. One must have a good balance between the perceived challenges of the task at hand and his or her ownperceived skills. One must have confidence that he or she is capable to do the task at hand.
  3. The task at hand must have clear and immediate feedback. This helps the person negotiate any changing demands and allows him or her to adjust his or her performance to maintain the flow state.???

Most work doesn???t meet these criteria and so ???flow??? is not all that common, but it is amongst the best states of mind a human can hope to achieve.

Skout’s minor problem – Teenagers

The study also contradicts the widely held image of sex abuse in which an adult poses as a teen online to lure minors over with a bait and switch ??? say, promises of playing Xbox that turn into abuse. (Although it???s important to note that it appears in the Skout cases that adults did pose as minors to access the underage portion of the app.) Cases of ???Internet-related child exploitation,??? they report, ???typically involved post-pubescent youth who were aware that they were meeting an adult male for the purpose of engaging in sexual activity.??? One study of such cases found that only 5 percent ???were deceived by offenders claiming to be teens or lying about their sexual intentions??? and  73 percent who ???met an offender in person did so more than once.

Creative Commons Meetup: Open Research and OER in Tertiary

THURSDAY 12 July 2012, 6pm-7pm at NetHui 2012, SkyCity Convention Centre

Creative Commons licences are an important aspect of wider movements facing our tertiary sector: Open Access to research outputs, and Open Education Resources. Academics have seen international tensions between the drive to make publicly funded research available to taxpayers, and the traditionally closed models of the publishing industry. There is also an urgent push to lower the cost of producing educational materials, and providing free access to them online for public consumption.
