Android as a life management platform

The reason there is an aftermarket for Nexus hardware is that Google intended for Android to be open and generative from the start, pointedly saying that Nexus is ???unlocked and contract free.??? This is why, even though Google does lots of business with mobile phone company operators, it is those operators??? friend only to the degree it helps lead those operators past current customer-entrapment business models and into a future thick with positive economic externalities. Amidst those externalities, phone companies will still enjoy huge built-out infrastructure and other first-mover advantages. They will wake up and smell the infinity.

Vodafone-TelstraClear deal cleared

Commerce Commission chairman Dr Mark Berry said in a statement, “In reaching its decision, the Commission considered that the merged entity would continue to face competition from Telecom, as well as Orcon, Slingshot and other smaller businesses in providing fixed line voice and broadband services to residential and small business customers”.

“The Commission did not find any significant business overlap between Vodafone and TelstraClear in the provision of either mobile phone services or fixed line services to large businesses.

The path to approval was cleared by Vodafone not seeking to acquire all of TelstraClear’s spectrum, which falls in the 4G-friendly 1800MHz and 2100MHz bands.

Ah, so not all spectrum obtained in the deal.

A Facebook Smartphone ??? Why?

At the end of last week???s Monday Note, I briefly wondered about the rumored Amazon smartphone. Would it follow the Kindle Fire strategy: Pick Android???s lock and sell the device at or below cost in order to lubricate the wheels of Amazon???s e-commerce of tangible and intangible things?

This week, we have the rebirth of another story: the Facebook phone. All Things D, the Wall Street Journal???s site dedicated to??? All Things Digital, aired a series of posts focused on Facebook???s hypothetical jump into the smartphone fray. Given the site???s reputation for reliable sources and real writing, this must be more than idle speculation floated for pageviews.

But what???s going on? Why would Facebook ??? or Amazon ??? create its own smartphone?

Yet another service, yet another device. Used to be the goal was to own the consumer, now the consumer believes they own you…
